Re-energise your office coffee service offering with water-based caffeine

4 Minuten Lesezeit

For decades, Office Coffee Services have focused on providing great tasting coffee, delivering energy to office workers across countries, industries and disciplines. As consumer trends and expectations have evolved, providers have continually adapted their offering, moving from traditional filter coffee machines to bean to cup systems capable of serving cappuccinos and flat whites, introducing a wider range of milk options and expanding into alternative caffeine-based beverages such as teas and coffees. Just as workplaces have evolved, so have consumer tastes.

The next shift in caffeine-based drinks is more significant than the gradual changes in hot drink preferences seen in the past. Today's consumers are looking for more than a simple caffeine boost, seeking drinks that offer additional function and increasingly turning towards water-based caffeine beverages, or "clean energy", if you will. This shift requires OCS providers to think about water as a caffeine-based value stream rather than simply a breakroom add-on. In fact, recent research has found that two in five UK adults have swapped their morning coffee for a different source of energy, with younger generations leading the trend.

Coffee is losing its monopoly

Coffee remains deeply embedded in workplace culture, but its position as the dominant source of caffeine is being challenged. This shift is not driven by caffeine consumption falling. If anything, demand for energy and focus remains as strong as ever. What is changing is the format through which people choose to consume it.

Consumers increasingly want drinks that combine multiple benefits in a single product. Energy, hydration, vitamins and wellness have become closely linked, giving rise to an entirely new generation of functional beverages.

Research reflects this change in behaviour. Nearly 40% of Gen Z consumers have replaced traditional hot drinks with functional alternatives, while many actively seek products that support concentration, hydration and overall wellbeing.

As businesses invest more heavily in employee experience and wellbeing initiatives, the expectation for greater choice continues to grow. Coffee machines remain an important fixture, but they are increasingly being joined by new beverage options designed around modern habits.

The rise of water based caffeine

Many of today's fastest-growing drinks have one thing in common: they begin with water.

Functional hydration tablets, energy powders, electrolyte blends and matcha all rely on access to chilled, sparkling or hot water, giving employees greater control over how they stay energised throughout the day. As hybrid working continues to reshape expectations, businesses are looking beyond traditional coffee offerings and investing in amenities that support wellbeing, flexibility and choice.

For distributors, this shift presents an opportunity that extends far beyond the initial equipment sale. Unlike canned or bottled beverages, functional consumables are designed to be used regularly, creating the potential for repeat revenue streams that complement existing coffee solutions rather than replace them.

The future of caffeine is water.

As demand for functional beverages grows, providing workplace drinking water systems becomes essential.

The T3 integrated tap system transforms the office kitchen, providing chilled, sparkling, ambient and hot water from a single system. Whether employees are preparing energy tablets, mixing functional powders or making matcha, the T3 creates a simple and premium experience.

More importantly, these systems enable distributors to move beyond one-off equipment sales. They create the infrastructure for repeat consumable revenue, allowing businesses to introduce new products and adapt to changing preferences over time.
